Modern Style Library Wedding

I love it when couples select a unique wedding venue and this couple did just that! Hosting their wedding at the Madison Public Library in Wisconsin was a brilliant idea and looks amazing. From the bride: My favorite part of our wedding day was the ceremony because we wrote the whole thing ourselves. We wanted to make sure to honor our parents, make things as personal as possible, and to allow the important people in our lives to be included in all of our moments. One thing that especially stands out is our unity ceremony: we each simultaneously drew blind contours of each other (continuous line portraits where you don’t look at the page while you draw, only at the subject). The final portraits were hilarious and silly, and still maintained the symbolism of our continuing focus on one another as we move forward in our relationship. Also, our dog Odie was the ring bearer, so that was awesome too. A big thank you to Maison Meredith Photography for sharing this one-of-a-kind inspirational wedding with us today.

I’ll admit, however, that it took me a long time to really understand what it meant when people tell you to try to make the wedding day “ours.” One small detail got me started on the right track – crocheting white flowers to be included in the bouquets – and from there the creativity grew. From wax print fabric reminiscent of my years in Peace Corps, to an open mic portion of the reception to honor the talents of our musical friends and family, we found many ways to include “us” in our day and make it truly unique and memorable.

If I have any advice to future brides, it would be to keep the end goal in focus and let the other things drop away. Remember that your wedding day is truly about your love and your dedication to each other, and about including those you love in this moment in your relationship. Maybe someone will notice that the ribbon around the boutonnieres matches the mother of the bride’s dress … but maybe not. As my uncle (who was also our florist) said when I started fretting over white spray roses vs. peach spray roses, “everything matters a little bit and nothing matters that much.”
