How to Make a Floral Wedding Crown

Floral Crown Step By Step DIY TutorialFor today’s DIY tutorial, we tried our hand at making a floral crown for a bride! We love some of the lush crowns we have seen on the blog, like this one from one of our favorite wedding inspiration posts! Turns out, its super easy and really fun to do. One important tip, you want to make sure it will lay correctly on your own head, so test it out as you go or use a foam form or have a friend model for you as you go. When selecting your flowers be sure to use some that have some structure to their stems but be wary of flowers with extra stiff stems that you won’t be able to bend. If you are working with roses be sure to remove the thorns first! We chose a variety of delicate greenery, white wax flowers and cream lisianthus but these techniques will work with a variety of different flowers. Have fun!

How To Make a Floral Crown

What You’ll Need :  Clippers / Floral Wire / Flowers / Filler / Greenery / Ribbon

First, start with composing the front of the crown.  We highly suggest using a range in sizes of the same flower and including some buds.  Once you have chosen your blossoms, trim away the extra greenery, leaving about six inches of bare stem for you to work with.

Next, trim some filler to mix in with the blossoms.  You will want a few sprigs about the same length as the flower stems.

Then, lay out your flower stems and filler how you want it to lay at the front of the crown and using the floral wire,  bind the stems to that they are secure. Trim some small pieces of greenery to slip into the wire where you need to fill out the blossoms.

Then, bind the greenery sprigs to the stem where it would have naturally appeared on the flower stem.

Leave the loose ends of the wires free so that you can go back in and add to the crown.

Once you have one half of the crown finished, make the second half by twisting together sprigs of the filler.

Gently wind the wire around the sprigs so that the smallest branches are still free but the sprigs are securely bound. Leave the end of the wire free at the end.  You will need it for the next step. bridal-hair-flower-wreath-tutorial-diy-8

Add some small buds the the end of the piece containing the main blossom. This will help blend the transition to the other half.

Taking the two front ends of wither side, gently wrap them together as if you were braiding them gently. Then take the extra twine and secure the two sides together by wrapping the area where the two pieces overlap. Now that it is one piece, you want to measure the length and make sure it is big enough.  If you need extra length, add to the ends of both sides to be sure that the blossom stays in the correct place in relation to the bow that will be at the back.

Once the crown is the correct length, add greenery to the very ends to fill out the bare stems at the end of each side. Leave so leaves free to hang down at the back if you so choose.

Once both ends have been filled out, cross the ends and secure them with wire by wrapping the place where they cross. Tug the sides to be sure that it is perfectly secure.

Now look at the crown carefully and be sure that all wires have been tucked in and that all of the sprigs are secure. If there are any bare spots or pieces that are took long, now is the time ti trim and fill to make sure the composition is perfect. Try the wreath on and make sure there are no pieces that need to be trimmed or held down with extra wire. For a more wild look, leave the filler long and allow it to spray out from the wreath. For a more conservative style, use some extra wire to hold the filler closer to the crown.

Once the wreath is finished, take a piece of ribbon and gently tie it over the place where you secured the two ends at the back, unless you are combining this with a veil in which case you may choose not to use a ribbon!
